Today we consider how to approach our own productions using narrative frameworks. We look at a hand-out and build on yeasterday's discussion about the audience's attempts to understand meaning through recognising structures (Todorov, Propp) and the creation of meaning though symbolic codes (Barthes).
Taking Julian McDougall's suggestion that classical narrative frameworks can be reductive and Barthes' assertion that the reader is the key negociator of meaning, we think about our own texts and how we used images and meanings that tap into already-held oppositions and responses to symbols.
We discuss the balance between enigma and action: especially relexant to thriller openings. What enigmas are set up in our thrillers? Useful examples under discussion: Cluedo, Alice in Luther, The Killing, trailers.
We define postmodernism.
We study three recent Examiners' Reports.
PREP: Analyse ONE of your productions in relation to narrative.
