RESEARCH: SHOT COUNT ANALYSIS

Today we are catching up on the September planning and learning how to do shot counts.
Follow these guidelines for your shot count analysis of 7 music videos.SHOT COUNT guidance HERE.
  • Aim to do 6 shot count analyses
  • Choose bands / artists /performers like yours (and one for yours too)
  • For Miley Cyrus: Rihanna, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Avril Lavigne
  • For Red Hot Chili Peppers: Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, Rage Against The Machine, Jimi Hendrix, The Clash, Sex Pistols
Shot Count Analysis

Select a video and embed onto your blog. Carefully count the number of shots in the whole video and relate that to the length of the track in minutes/seconds.

Copy and Paste the chart below into a word document and save to your h drive. Watch a 30 second representative segment of the video shot by shot and log the number of shots and types of shot (CU, MCU, LS etc).

Upload the completed chart to your blog and present your findings:

Track:

Artist:

Director:

Release Date:

Length of video:

Number of shots in entire video:

Average length of shot:

.

Number of shots in 30 second segment:

Within the 30 second segment there are:

Number of CU:
Number of ECU:
Number of LS or wide shots:
Number of MS:
Number of panning shots:
Number of tilts:
Crane shots:
low angle shots:
other shots:

Analysis - what have you learned from this process? REALLY IMPORTANT! When I did my shot count analysis of 30 seconds of Wrecking Ball today in class with you, I found that the very high number of CUs reflected what Richard Dyer claims about how stars (performers) are products created by industries (the record label) to promote a product (the music album) with the performance designed to sell the product. The star image is prioritized and kept in high profile in front of the audience.
