EVALUATION QUESTION 1: GENRE CONVENTIONS

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

It is time to start three Word documents in which you write about the codes and conventions of each of your three products.

  1. Main production: when you have your text ready in the Word document, you will use your YouTube final film / trailer production and select the annotations button. You can upload your comments on how you've used genre codes and conventions. Be succint (brief and to the point). Remember to use moving image terminology on editing, camerawork, sound and mise-en-scene. Remember to focus on genre (what makes your production a professional looking short film or trailer). How is your audience attracted and addressed? Look back at your analysis of trailers and short films genre codes and conventions for prompts.

  1.  Ancillary production: film poster: you have completed an analysis of your film poster. Make sure that the genre codes and conventions are all covered (see here). Thus is your chance to talk about framing, genre, font choices, billing block, social media links, and so on, as well as using the classwork on framing.

  1. Ancillary production: film radio trailer
Explain the structure of the trailer: write out the words in the trailer, then explain what is taken from the film script, what is the 'puff' or 'lure' that draws attention to the film's qualities, then note the institutional information such as release date, director, 'from the maker of...', film festival screenings etc.
What in your view makes yours a successful film radio trailer? How is genre signaled? What use is made of different types of sound, such as voice-over, dialogue, music, spot sounds?
What did you set out to do, how do the sounds, dialogue, music etc shape the trailer? What does the institutional information contribute, explaining where and when the film can be seen, who the actors / directors are?
  2. Ancillary production: film magazine design: use the glossary (here) for correct medium-specific terminology. Explain your title choice, your framing, font choices, article titles, puffs, and so on.
