REVISION MATERIALS

In the last month, our focus has been on preparation for the A2 exam. To remind you:
  • Revise from the page on THEORETICAL APPROACHES where you will find brilliant additional material on Section B questions: Are media texts merely 'a window on the world?' NO! Find out why from Martin Sohn-Rethel, Paul Kerr and Jean-Luc Goddard (remember that our points tend to go in threes).
  • How is meaning made in texts: is it a straightforward matter of a filmmaker setting out to offer representations that are accepted as intended? Or must we take into account Stuart Hall's 'reception theory'?
  • Why is the panoptic tower a metaphor for how communities seek to shape the behaviour of their children? What does Foucault explain about how communities internalise regimes of power? How does it help explain why the younger generation of Muslims, Sikhs and Bangladeshis seem to exhibit hybrid identities, that is, they seem to adopt traditional cultural practices in front of their parents (self-policing) while covertly behaving in a way that fits in with their peers when their parents cannot see?
  • How can you link Ae Fond Kiss (film text) to the murder of Shafilea Ahmed (newspaper text) using the theoretical framework of Erving Goffman: identity as performance?
  • Section A preparation: Have you analysed your skills development from prelim to AS to A2 in the light of

        Digital Technology  Creativity     Research and planning  Post-production

    Using conventions from real media texts

  • Section A preparation: Have you deconstructed your A2 production in the light of

     Genre  Narrative  Representation  Audience     Media language
