RESEARCH: TRAILER ANALYSIS

We watch the trailer for Mother! and analyse its codes and conventions.

  • intertitles
  • voiceover
  • dialogue
  • cuts and transitions that vary the pace
  • the use of the protagonists
  • music
  • release date
  • USP
  • genre
  • narrative
  • target audience
  • camerawork
  • credits

We read The Sunday Times critic Robbie Collin who welcomes this 'maverick film' and expresses his view (10.09.17) that it is welcome at a time when Hollywood is in thrall to 'franchises' which stifle originality.

We analyse the ways in which this trailer delivers predictable horror genre conventions and which aspects are more original, making its USP (unique selling point).

Use the Film Education grid and remember that our chief examiner has always advocated 'critical reflection' in our writing, that is, showing evidence of evaluation, not just reporting what you see.
