PRESS REGULATION

In class, we revised press regulation by returning to the PPs and listening to a presentation.
For PREP, write 1 1/3 to I 1/2 pages on press regulation.
1. PPC period: give background (what led to the Leveson Inquiry -slide 46) and explain why the PCC did not prevent breaches of the code.
2. Remember to use case studies as you go from the PowerPoint or your own ideas
3. IPSO: post Leveson. What is IPSO and why was it introduced? Who makes it up? What are the main points in the Editor's Codes of Practice (slides 33 and 34)?
4. What  kind of complaints does it receive? Give examples.
5. Why is it not entirely effective?
6. IMPRESS: what is IMPRESS and how does it differ from IPSO? Who makes up IMPRESS? What complaints does it handle? Give examples of complaints.
7. Concluding remarks (slides 54-6 useful) : how far is it possible to regulate the press? What do 'theorists' like Gauntlett (slides 59 - 62) and say about this issue?
8. On the wall at BAFTA is inscribed in huge letters: 'News is the lifeblood of democracy, information is the lifeblood of democracy." Trevor McDonald, A Life in Television.
