G325 CRITIQUE OF EXEMPLAR ESSAY

After revising yesterday's class discussion, we move forward to examine Sathnam Sanghera's criticism of the BBC's minimal representation of British Asians. We take two of the essay titles given on the class blog and relate them to Sanghera's assertion.
We revisit the issue of mediation:
  • All representations are mediated, even those that individuals or collective groups make of themselves, and we should remember this when considering issues about 'reality' of representation and whether media reflects or affects representations.
  • David Buckingham: "What are the social implications of media representations?  The media do not just offer us a transparent 'window on the world', they offer us a mediated version of the world. They do not just present reality, they re-present it."

PREP: for Monday 29 September Continuation of the critique of an exemplar examination essay started in class. You have received three essays via email. Print out M.D.'s essay and 'mark' it using a red / blue biro. To do this, where you spot a point that you would like to challenge, query or support, mark it with a number circled around, then footnote the number and expand on your point, as I do when marking. The second sentence offers food for thought: what does the candidate mean when he says that the media do not re-present reality? That they "cannot conjure any image of a collective group"?

Mark scheme:
EAA = explanation, analysis, argument (out of 20) To get an A, you need 16
EG = use of examples (out of 20) To get an A, you need 16
TM = use of terminology (out of 10) To get an A, you need 8
